Every living being deserves to be treated with <em>grace <\/em>and <em>respect<\/em>. There is enough hate in this world, so why not try and spread something positive for the greater good this time?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping this viewpoint, <a href=\"https:\/\/daastan.com\/\">Daastan<\/a> hosted a live session on transgender awareness with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meraqissa.com\/Alisheikhqalb\">Ali Sheikh<\/a> author of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meraqissa.com\/book\/1666\">Thousands of Desires<\/a>\u2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.120under40.org\/nominee\/saro-imran\">Saro Imran,<\/a> a transgender activist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transgender Character Sitara &#8211; Star of the Book?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samin asked Ali what inspired him to write the character \u2018Sitara\u2019 in his book? Ali explained how all his life he had witnessed mistreatment and abuse of the trans people. In his book, Sitara is a transgender woman. She creates a safehouse for others like her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/samin-qureshi-1ba6031a1?originalSubdomain=pk\">Samin<\/a> asked Ali what <em>role<\/em> the <em>entertainment industry<\/em> plays in the portrayal of trans people in society. He replied that in today\u2019s world, <em>exposure<\/em> to all kinds of media is up to several hours a day. He also emphasized how one needs to be able to <em>connect<\/em> to a character in a book or on TV to be able to understand what they are going through. This is important for trans characters too, in order to be <em>understood<\/em> they need to be <em>included<\/em> in the plot in an important way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ali states that change needs to be brought in our society at a <em>grassroot level.<\/em> Common problems such as <em>ageism<\/em> and <em>hate<\/em> need to be swapped with <em>acceptance <\/em>and <em>mindfulness<\/em>. Again this needs to happen collectively at national level for a <em>sustainable change<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saro: A Ray of Hope for Transgenders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our special guest for the Live was <em>Saro Imran<\/em>. Saro is the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AAFcbo\/\">Activist Alliance foundation<\/a> in Multan. Her work is devoted to bringing positive change for transgenders in Pakistan. Saro was awarded \u2018<em>Blogger of the month<\/em>\u2019 in <strong>2019<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samin inquired Saro\u2019s views on the <em>general behaviour<\/em> towards trans people in Pakistan. According to Saro, in bigger cities like <em>Lahore, Islamabad <\/em>and <em>Karachi<\/em> the general attitude is better. Trans people can come to the forefronts more easily and run organizations like hers. In smaller cities however, attitudes still need a lot of change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samin also asked what role social media plays in bringing about a change in such behaviours. Saro explained that social media plays a <em>positive<\/em> role. Transgender people are <em>active<\/em> on social platforms more than ever these days.<em> Sensitisation<\/em> through such platforms is <em>possible <\/em>and <em>crucial<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is true for the <em>entertainment industry<\/em> as well. According to Saro, trans people should be given <em>main roles<\/em> in order to shed importance on their existence. Trans people shouldn\u2019t be recognised solely for their <em>gender<\/em>, but also for their views on other important topics as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Message to society:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the session was wrapped up, Ali and Saro gave their individual message to viewers. Ali asked the people of Pakistan to change their viewpoint to a positive one and to <em>accept<\/em> Transgender people as important and equal members of the society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saro requested that trans people be treated as equals and be given their due rights as humans.
