We are back with another author interview! This time Team\u00a0Daastan<\/a> interviewed Sehr Emad, the author of Our Small Lives<\/em><\/a>. Let\u2019s hear Sehr\u2019s journey of writing.<\/p>\n

Meet Sehar Emad<\/h2>\n

Sehr is a freelance author<\/em> and creative writing teacher<\/em>. She has a masters in Sociology<\/em> from the National University of Singapore<\/em>. In addition to that, Sehr also has a masters in Human Resource Management<\/em> from The London School of Economics<\/em>. \u201cOur Small Lives\u201d is Sehr\u2019s debut novel. She hit upon the idea for her novel at The Yale Writers’ Conference<\/strong> in 2017<\/strong>. Even though she is originally from Lahore, Sehar currently resides in Manila with her husband and two sons.<\/p>\n

Sehr Emad shares her Writing Journey<\/h2>\n

Sehr began her writing journey early on in life. As a kid, her creativity was always encouraged. \u201cMy poems were read out in class, I felt appreciated,\u201d <\/i>says\u00a0Sehr. Therefore, it is natural that she continues to pursue writing. Sehr\u2019s writing journey is one filled with memories of appreciation and encouragement. However, she does face challenges as a writer.<\/p>\n

Our Small Lives<\/h2>\n

Our Small Lives is a novel that lays bare the patriarchal notions and marginalisation of minorities<\/em> present in the Pakistani society. The plot revolves around a young Ahmadi girl Sarah as she struggles to break free from the chains of life. It is a story of religious\u00a0and racial conflict, lovelessness and duty. \"Sehar<\/a><\/p>\n

Giving voice to Minorities<\/h2>\n

Through her novel, Sehr is trying to raise voice on behalf of the minorities in Pakistan. She empathises with their struggles and the discrimination they face. \u201cJinnah wanted a Pakistan where minorities would have a voice, says<\/i>\u00a0Sehr.\u00a0Moreover, she is of the opinion that her faith does not allow her to shun anyone\u2019s religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been many incidents time and time again \u00a0that show discricimination against marginalised communities. They do not enjoy the same rights as we do.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The main character of Sehr\u2019s novel is an Ahmadi girl named Sarah. Therefore, she says, \u201cSarah embodies a disadvantaged position in society due to gender and faith.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Striving towards a Religiously Tolerant Society<\/h2>\n

Sehr openly talks about the disparities present in the religious and social structure of our society. She hopes for a better society for everyone regardless of their religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cHumanity is the language we all must speak.\u201d \u2013 Sehr Emad<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sehr believes that there\u2019s a lesson in history for all of us. We must not let history repeat itself. \u201cThe Muslims were persecuted, hurt, exploited in the subcontinent,\u201d <\/i>says Sehr. She wishes for the cycle of violence to end and to see a religiously tolerant society in the decades to come.<\/p>\n

Sehr Emad talks about Patriarchy<\/h2>\n

Sehr\u2019s book highlights the struggles women face in the society because of patriarchy<\/em>. According to Sehr, \u201cpatriarchy is prevalent in a lot of Asian countries to a large extent.\u201d <\/i>\u00a0In the context of Pakistan, Sehr believes things are slowly changing but still we have a long way to go. She is of the opinion that a\u00a0step forward in the right direction can possibly change the current narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatriarchy has impacted our lives more than we can think of. Women are told they can not live on their own for life. The idea that they need another man\u2019s shelter is instilled in them. We like to believe that such things are merely a product of fiction. However, these stories are very much a part of our realities.\u201d \u00a0\u2013 Sehr Emad<\/i><\/p>\n

Message to the Youth<\/h2>\n

At the end, Sehr talks about the importance of reading<\/i>. She believes reading helps one to self-reflect, grow as a person and empathise with others. \u201cReading teaches us to look at life from someone else\u2019s perspective,\u201d <\/i>says Sehr. One advice she would like to give the youth and everyone in general is, \u201cdo not create demarcations and do not label people.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope my book teaches readers to be more sensitive towards minorities and to be more inclusive of them. I hope it also gives them the idea of how a person feels alienated in their own homeland.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
