The stories originating from this region are rich in history <\/em>and culture<\/em>. However, that is not all the Asian writers have written about. From contemporary fiction <\/em>to fantasy <\/em>and thriller<\/em> writing, Asian writers are now receiving critical<\/em> appreciation<\/em> all around the world. Today, Team\u00a0Daastan<\/a> is celebrating the Asian writers who are not only loved among their own people but are applauded worldwide. Join us through this exciting rundown of the Asian Writers. <\/i>You may find your favourites on this list!
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

Khalid Hosseni<\/h2>\n

Khalid Hosseini<\/a> is a prominent name from Asian literature. Hosseini was born in Kabul<\/em>, Afghanistan to a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry. The\u00a0Foreign Ministry relocated the Hosseini family to Paris in 1976<\/em>. However, they\u00a0were ready to return to Kabul in 1980<\/em>. But by then their homeland had witnessed a communist coup and the invasion of the Soviet Army<\/em>. Khalid along with his family was\u00a0granted political asylum<\/em> in the United States<\/em>, and in September 1980<\/em> moved to San Jose, California.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

His writing journey began in 2001<\/em>, while he was practicing medicine<\/em> in LA. Finally in 2003<\/em>, he published his debut novel, The Kite Runner<\/em>. <\/i>The Kite Runner became one of the greatest debut books of the 21st<\/em> century. Later, his book was made into a film. Hosseini continued to write bestsellers after his debut novel.<\/p>\n

\"Asian<\/a><\/h2>\n

Hosseini has also been a Goodwill Ambassador<\/em> for UNHCR<\/em>, the UN Refugee Agency\u00a0since 2006<\/em>. Moreover, Hosseini established The Khaled Hosseini Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit, which provides humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Kevin Kwan<\/h2>\n

If you are a fan of the movie or book The Crazy Rich Asians, you must know the man behind the masterpiece. It is none other than Kevin Kwan<\/a>. Kwan was born into an established Chinese Singaporean<\/em> family. His childhood among the elite Singaporean families inspired him to write novels in mock epic style<\/i>. Crazy Rich Asians, his first book was inspired from a poem he wrote \u201cSingapore Bible Study\u201d.<\/em> In the poem he describes how the bible study groups are excuse to gossip<\/i> and flaunt<\/i> expensive jewellery and clothes. However, the poem was not the only story Kwan had to tell. Therefore, he began writing novels capturing the extravagant lives of Asia\u2019s elite<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Kevin<\/a><\/p>\n

Kwan is among one of the ‘Five Writers to Watch’ <\/em>on the list of Hollywood’s Most Powerful Authors published by The Hollywood Reporter<\/i>. In addition to that, he is on the Time Magazine’s list of 100<\/em> most influential people<\/i> and The Asian Hall of Fame<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Asian<\/a><\/p>\n

Arundhati Roy<\/h2>\n

Suzanna Arundhati Roy<\/em>is<\/a> a legend among the writers of the 21st<\/i> century. She was born in Shillong, India<\/i>. Roy is not only credited with writing one of the best novels of our century but is also admired for her social<\/i> and environmental work<\/i>. Despite being an Indian, Roy has been vocal about the plight of Kashmiris<\/i>. In addition, she deeply condemns the involvement of US<\/i> in Afghanistan<\/i>. Similarly, Roy has been active in showing her support for the people of Palestine<\/i>. Through the force of pen, Arundhati aims to create a world without suffering<\/i> and hatred<\/i>. Her\u00a0political<\/i> and social activism<\/i> through out the decades speaks for her humanity.<\/p>\n

\"Asian<\/a><\/p>\n

For her remarkable work as a writer and activist, Roy has received several awards. In 1997<\/i>,\u00a0Roy won the Booker Prize<\/i>\u00a0for her novel The God of Small Things<\/i>. The prize included a monetary reward of around US $30,000<\/i>. It also contained a note that read,<\/p>\n

“The book keeps all of the promises that it makes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Kamila Shamsi<\/h2>\n

The award winning writer Kamilla Shamsi<\/i><\/a> was born into a Pakistan family of talented women on August 13th, 1973.<\/i> Kamilla is the daughter of the journalist<\/i> and editor<\/i> Muneeza Shamsi <\/i>and the niece of the writer<\/i> Attia Hussain.<\/i> Being brought up in a literary environment, Kamila wrote her first novel at the age of 25<\/i> in 1999<\/i>. For her debut novel \u201cIn \u00a0the city by the sea\u201d<\/i>, she was shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize <\/i>in the UK. For the same novel, Kamila also recieved the Prime Minister\u2019s Award<\/i> for literature.<\/p>\n

\"Asian<\/a><\/p>\n

After 1999, Kamila wrote one hit novel after another. Finally in 2018<\/i>, Kamila won the Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction <\/i>for \u201cHome Fire\u201d<\/i>. Among other noteworthy awards, Kamila holds the honour of receiving the Patras Bukhari Award<\/i> twice and the Nelly Sachs Award.<\/i><\/p>\n

Jenny Han<\/h2>\n

For the most part of the last decade, there has been talk of a new genre of novel on the horizon. This genre specifically targets young adult audience<\/i>, offering them a quick fictional reads of their dream lives. Among the pioneers of such novel writing, Asia has Jenny Han<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Jenny Han<\/a> is a librarian<\/i> turned young adult fiction writer <\/i>from Korea<\/i>. Han currently resides in New York.<\/i> She is not only a New York Times bestseller<\/i> but also the producer<\/i> of Netflix\u2019s adaptation of \u201cTo All The Boys I\u2019ve Loved<\/a>\u201d<\/i>.<\/b> Her romance novel series, now movies with the protagonist Lara Jean<\/i> made her popular among the teens worldwide. However, Han\u2019s success journey goes all the back to her novel \u201cThe Summer I Turned Pretty<\/a>\u201d<\/i>.\"Asian<\/a><\/p>\n

Rabisankar Bal<\/h2>\n

Rabisankar Bal<\/a> was a Bangla novelist, short story writer and journalist. Apart from creating literary works out of his own imagination, he also translated some of Sadat Hassan Manto\u2019s writings.<\/em> Born in the decades right after the independence of subcontinent, Bal\u2019s writing explore the impacts of partition<\/em>. He has authored over fifteen novels, several short story collections, literary essays and even poetry.<\/em><\/p>\n

In his 30 years of writing career, Bal won major literary awards of India. For instance The West Bengal Government awarded him the Sutapa Roychowdhury Memorial Prize<\/i> for his novel The Biography Of Midnight.<\/i> Moreover, Bal\u2019s Dozakhnama<\/i> is a winner of The West Bengal Government’s Bankimchandra Smriti Puraskar,<\/i> which was named the best novel of 2010<\/i> by the late, Sunil Gangopadhyay.<\/em><\/p>\n
