Last month at Dastaan<\/a>, we talked about the modern take on Jane Austen\u2019s<\/em> novels. Today, we are focusing solely on \u201cThe Beauty and the Beast\u201d<\/em> retellings. We all grew up listening to the tale of innocent Belle<\/em> and her evil captor, the Beast<\/em>. Even though the original tale dates back to thousand of years, there have been many versions of this story throughout the history. Let\u2019s have a look on\u00a0the contemporary YA<\/em> \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d retellings.<\/p>\n

A Court of Thorn and Roses \u2013 Sarah J Maas<\/h2>\n

In Feyre\u2019s<\/em> village winters are long<\/em> and merciless<\/em>. Therefore, there is no choice left for her other than to go to the forest and hunt for her family\u2019s survival<\/em>. However, the forest is home to all kinds of predators<\/em>. One evening, Feyre ends up killing a giant wolf-like<\/em> creature and the course of her life changes. To avenge the death<\/em> of the wolf-like creature, his friend Tamlin<\/em>, a masked man who shape shifts<\/em> takes Feyre captive in Prithyian<\/em>, the land of fae. Soon Feyre and Tamlin grow to like each other and the rest of the tale unfolds in the old fashioned \u2018beauty and the beast\u2019<\/em> manner. Even though, A Court of Thorn and Roses<\/a> is known to be a fairytale retelling, Sarah J. Maas has been able to build a separate fanbase for this series because of her descriptive prose<\/i> and a wide range of complex characters<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The story always begins with an evil enchantress or sorceress<\/em> cursing the vain and arrogant<\/em> yet handsome prince<\/em> to a life of loneliness. In the Curse-breaker<\/a> series by Brigid Kemmerer, Prince Rhen<\/em>, the heir of Emberfall<\/em> is condemned to relive his eighteenth<\/em> year slowly turning into a beast<\/em>, unless a young girl falls in love<\/em> with him. However, with the ruin surrounding Emberfall<\/em>, it is almost impossible to find a girl who would fall in love with a cruel beast<\/em>. But hope knocks at Emberfall, as Harper<\/em> a girl from the streets of Washington, DC,<\/em> is suddenly pulled into a magical world<\/em>. Upon meeting each other, both of them are bewildered<\/em> at the thought of what is at stake for them. As the duo spends some time together, Rhen realises, for him Harper is not just a means to end the curse<\/em>, she is so much more.<\/p>\n

Here we do not have a naive girl<\/em> from a humble background being lost in the woods. The story revolves around Princess Raelyn<\/em> who is betrothed to the Crown Prince Tristan<\/em>. Their political marriage<\/em> is a seal cementing a peace treaty<\/em> between their kingdoms. However, on the day of her wedding, a monster-man<\/em> Alexander, takes her captive claiming to be the real<\/em> crown prince. Read the book to unfold how Raelyn learns the secret<\/em> to Alexander\u2019s\u00a0rough exterior<\/em> and starts to fall for the kind man<\/em> hiding behind that facade<\/em>.<\/p>\n
