In the last few months, here at Daastan<\/a>, we have had a great time exploring different genres<\/em> of the Young Adult<\/em> literature. However, today we are moving towards the next age group and catering to their taste. It\u2019s time to talk about New Adult<\/em> fiction.<\/p>\n

New Adult Fiction<\/h2>\n

The term \u201cnew adult\u201d<\/em> was coined when publishers had an issue categorising certain books that fit neither Young Adult<\/em> nor Adult Fiction<\/em>. For, these books explored topics that were for the audience at the threshold of adulthood<\/em> but not quite there yet. The protagonists in these books were people around the age of 18-30<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the themes addressed in the new adult are more in depth<\/em> and mature<\/em>. For instance, a lot of YA books talk about suicide, bullying, sexuality, abuse<\/em> and other topics. However, in YA the authors do not take the artistic liberty <\/i>to sometime talk openly about these subjects. In short, they have to mute it down to make it age appropriate<\/i>. Whereas, new adult fiction deals with the seriousness<\/i> of the complications arising from the aforementioned subjects without sugar coating<\/i> them. It does so because the audience of new adult fiction is much more mature and holds the emotional capacity<\/i> to process the content.<\/p>\n

The Poppy War \u2013 R.F. Kuang<\/h2>\n

In Poppy War<\/a>, the best of science fiction<\/em> meets fantasy<\/em>. Inspired by the bloody history<\/em> of China<\/em>, Kuang writes a military tale<\/em> revolving around Rin<\/em>, a dark-skinned peasant girl<\/em> from the south. Suspicions about Rin grow when she wins an Empire-wide<\/em> contest formulated to test the academic strength<\/em> of people. It leaves the inhabitants of Nikan<\/em> confused and bitter. Rin\u2019s life changes as she starts to receive education at Sinegard<\/em>. At Sinegard, due to her humble background, Rin is a subject of her peers\u2019 hatred and prejudice<\/em>. However, soon Rin discovers she\u2019s not a common girl from south as her shamanic powers<\/em> come to light. In the darkest hour upon Nikara Empire<\/i>, Rin realises she might be her people\u2019s only hope<\/i>. But she understands that all power comes at a price<\/i>, so what does she must sacrifice<\/i> in order to save her people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hold the fate of the country in your hands, if you have accepted your obligation to your people, then your life ceases to be your own.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Atlas Six \u2013 Olivie Blake<\/h2>\n

With fall<\/em> and winter<\/em> upon us, it\u2019s time to dust off our dark academia<\/a> book shelves<\/em> and delve deeper once again into the world of secret societies, magical potions, leather jackets, gothic architecture, secret gardens and mysterious romances<\/em>. Now that we have made your little dark academia heart flutter, ofcourse we have for you a great recommendation<\/em>. If you enjoyed reading the Ninth House, The Maidens, If we were villains, and The Secret History,<\/i> you are in for a treat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Atlas Six\u201d <\/a>is a story about six initiates<\/em> fighting against each other to secure place in a secret society<\/em> that\u2019s responsible for keeping the ancient knowledge<\/em> safe. The society calls itself \u201cThe Alexandrian Society\u201d.<\/em> Those who earn their place among the society live a life of prestige, power, wealth and magic<\/em>. However, the path to that life is dotted with pitfalls, unforeseen betrayals and magical traps.<\/em> As the six chosen by Atlas Blakely<\/em> prepare for their initiation<\/em>, will they hold back<\/em> or show no remorse<\/em> in order to achieve their purpose?<\/p>\n

The Wolf and the Woodsman \u2013 Ava Reid<\/h2>\n

In the age brimming with retellings<\/em>, Ava Reid\u2019s \u201cThe Wolf and The Woodsman\u201d<\/em> is a refreshing departure<\/em> from the jewelled settings of castles<\/em>, as it is set in tundra<\/em>. The novel beautifully encompasses the story of two individuals sharing a history of alienation<\/em> and oppression<\/em> at the hands of their own people.\u00a0As G\u00e1sp\u00e1r<\/em> and Evike<\/em> venture on a journey to stop G\u00e1sp\u00e1r\u2019s evil brother, their loyalties<\/em> towards their thankless people<\/em> are tested. Would they be willing to sacrifice<\/em> anything and everything for those who always treated them as outcasts<\/em>?<\/p>\n

\u201cA bad memory shared between two people carries with it only half the pain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
