Forms of Urdu Poetry: Verses That Give Voice to Every Emotion

Urdu poetry is one of the richest literary traditions in South Asia. For centuries, it has served as one of the finest reflections of human emotions.  At times, it takes the form of a ghazal to express the pain of a beloved’s unfaithfulness. At others, it appears as nazm to convey profound emotions or highlight the importance of one’s homeland. Sometimes, it becomes a hamd to praise Allah, while at other times, it recounts significant historical events through the poignant verses of a marsiya.

Each form of Urdu poetry reflects a distinct emotion, experience, or state of mind. Every poetic form has its own complete structure, purpose, and artistic identity, making it the most effective medium for expressing its particular theme and emotions.

In this blog, we will discuss about these forms of Urdu poetry, their unique characteristics, origins, and significance in Urdu literature

Forms of Urdu poetry

Understanding the basic forms of Urdu poetry is important, as it helps you truly appreciate the beauty and artistic style of each poetic form. Whether you are a true admirer of different types of shayari in Urdu or someone who wants to write your poetry in urdu, this knowledge will help you better understand and enjoy the art of poetry.

In classical Urdu literature, poetry is broadly divided into two primary forms:

  • Nazm (structured poetry centered around one theme)
  • Ghazal (independent couplets connected by rhyme and refrain)

However, several poetic styles including Masnavi, Rubai, Qasida, Marsiya, Hamd, Naat, and others developed as specialized forms of Nazm. Since each has its own structure, purpose, and literary significance, we will discuss them independently.

1. Ghazal – غزل

Ghazal is one of the most celebrated forms of Urdu poetry, admired for its emotional depth, timeless appeal, and profound reflection of human emotions. Although ghazals are often associated with romantic love, they also explore themes of separation, longing, spirituality, philosophy, and the complexities of life.

Origin

The ghazal originated in Arabic poetry, where the word غزل  means to converse with the beloved or speak about love. It later flourished in Persian literature before becoming an integral part of Urdu poetry in the Indian subcontinent. Urdu Ghazal reached extraordinary heights during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which is often known as the “Golden Age” of urdu ghazal.

Features of a Ghazal

A ghazal is made up of a series of independent couplets (sher). Each sher (شعر) expresses a complete thought and can stand on its own, even though all the couplets follow the same poetic structure and meter.

Some of the defining characteristics of a ghazal include:

  • Every couplet follows the same meter (بحر)
  • Each couplet is complete in meaning and does not need the previous or following couplet to be understood.
  • A traditional ghazal usually contains five to fifteen couplets, although poets may write longer ones as well.
  • The first couplet is called the Matla, where both lines end with the same Qafia and Radif (if poet used radif in that ghazal)
  • A ghazal that also contains a radif is known as a Muraddaf Ghazal (مردف غزل )  while one without a radif is called a Ghair Muraddaf Ghazal (غیر مردف غزل )
  • If all the couplets revolve around one central theme, it is known as a Musalsal Ghazal.

Structure of a Ghazal

The structure of a ghazal follows a fixed rhyme pattern. In the Matla, both lines end with the Qafia followed by the Radif (if a radif is present). In every following couplet, only the second line ends with the same qafia and radif.

The rhyme scheme is represented as:

AA, BA, CA, DA…

where:

  • A represents the Qafia + Radif
  • B, C, D represent different first lines of the succeeding couplets.

Example

2. Nazm –  نظم

Nazm revolves around one central idea or theme. Every verse is connected to the next, creating a continuous flow of thought from the beginning to the end. This makes nazm ideal for expressing social issues, patriotism, philosophy, and personal experiences in a structured way.

Origin

Nazm has existed alongside Ghazal since the early development of Persian and Urdu literature. Although narrative poems and thematic poetry existed much earlier, the modern Urdu nazm developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The word Nazm has two meanings in Urdu literature. In its broader sense, nazm refers to any piece of poetry that is not prose (nasr). However, in literary discussions, Nazm also refers to a specific form of Urdu poetry, which is what we are discussing here.

Features of Nazm

Some of the defining characteristics of a nazm are:

  • It is based on a single central theme or idea.
  • All verses are interconnected and contribute to the same subject.
  • Unlike a ghazal, the verses are not independent.
  • A nazm may be rhymed or unrhymed, depending on the style chosen by the poet.
  • The length of a nazm is flexible and can range from a few lines to a long poem.

Structure of Nazm

Nazm does not follow a single fixed structure. It can be written in several forms depending on its rhyme, rhythm, and poetic style. Some of the major structural types of nazm include:

Paband Nazm –  پابند نظم

A Paband Nazm follows fixed rules of meter (Behr), rhyme (Qafia), and, where applicable, refrain (Radif). It maintains a regular rhythmic pattern throughout the poem.

Nazm e Muar’ra –  نظم معریٰ

A Muarra Nazm follows a consistent meter but does not use rhyme. The poem maintains its musical rhythm without following a rhyming pattern. This style is comparable to what is known as blank verse in English poetry.

Azad Nazm – (آزاد نظم)

An Azad Nazm (free verse) gives the poet greater freedom by moving away from traditional rhyme schemes and  strict meter. However, it still maintains an artistic rhythm and poetic flow.

Nasri Nazm – (نثری نطم)

A Nasri Nazm (Prose Poem) is written in prose rather than traditional verse. It does not rely on meter or rhyme but uses poetic language, imagery, symbolism, and emotion to create its impact.

پر نہیں طاقت پرواز مگر رکھتی ہے

قدسی الاصل ہے رفعت پہ نظر رکھتی ہے

.Origin

The word Masnavi is derived from the Arabic word Mathnawi (مثنوی), meaning “in pairs” or “twofold.” It originated in Persian literature and later became an important part of Urdu poetry.

Features of a Masnavi

Some of the defining characteristics of a masnavi include:

  • It is a long narrative poem built around a single story or subject.
  • It is commonly written about religious, historical, romantic, moral, or philosophical themes.
  • Every couplet is complete in itself, but all the couplets together develop one continuous narrative.
  • Both lines of each couplet rhyme with each other, while the rhyme changes in the next couplet.
  • The entire poem is written in the same meter (Behr).
  • There is no fixed limit on the number of couplets. A masnavi may consist of a few dozen couplets or several thousand.

Structure of a Masnavi

The defining feature of a masnavi is its unique rhyme scheme. In each couplet, both lines rhyme with one another, but every new couplet introduces a new rhyme. The rhyme scheme is represented as:

AA, BB, CC, DD..

This pattern allows poets to compose lengthy narratives without being restricted by a single rhyme throughout the poem.

Example:

کروں پہلے توحید یزداں رقم

جھکا جس کے سجدے کو اول قلم

سر لوح پر رکھ بیاض جبیں

کہا: دوسرا کوئی تجھ سا نہیں
