Daastan has something exciting in store for all the music enthusiasts! Rockistan by Tayyab Khalil is your guide into Pakistani rock music’s exciting past. Today, we are here to celebrate Tayyab’s book through a virtual event.
Tayyab Khalil – Author of Rockistan
Tayyab Khalil is Daastan’s latest author. He is a mechanical engineer. However, it is writing that has always been his one true love. Being a music enthusiast, Tayyab hit upon an idea of doing something incredibly amazing. The rich musical history of Pakistan lacks the documentation it deserves. Upon seeing this, he felt the need to preserve the vibrant history of Pakistani rock music. So, he ended up writing a book carrying that history.
Rockistan – History of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Pakistan
Tayyab’s Rockistan traces the history of Pakistan’s most turbulent music genre. Let’s quote Tayyab’s words to give you insight into the book.
”Rockistan: History of the Most Turbulent Music Genre in Pakistan explores the tumultuous history of the controversial genre that was once limited to the west and gradually penetrated Pakistan with the likes of Junoon, Karavan, Entity Paradigm, Call among others bursting into the mainstream. Centralized on their contributions towards propelling their genre into the public stratosphere, this is the very first book that historically documents the rise, fall and revival of rock music in Pakistan.”
According to Tayyab, despite the cultural alienation, rock ‘n’ roll ended up influencing the historical, political and social structure of Pakistan.
Rockistan – Virtual Book Launch
Fortunately, Rockistan’s launch turned out to be a star-studded evening. The best of Pakistan’s music industry were the part of panel discussion. Without further ado, let us introduce you to the panelists.
First on our list is Shahrukh Aslam. Shahrukh is the guitarist of Bayaan. Bayaan is a rock band from Lahore that put itself on the map after winning Pepsi Battle of the Bands. Apart from that, Shahrukh has performed in Nescafe Basement.
Next among the panelists is Faiza Mujahid. Faiza has been singing since 2005. But it was her musical contributions to Shoaib Mansoor’s ”Khuda Kay Liye” and ‘Bol’ that rose her to fame. She has also been a part of Coke Studio Season 10. In addition to that, Faiza also sang for the Bollywood movie, ’Pink’.
Lastly, the team of Quadrum also participated in the panel discussion of Rockistan, sharing their experience with the audience. They are also a Lahore based band of individuals who breathe music. Their “unique approach towards the music is making them the trendsetters in the country”, says Saad Sarfraz.
The virtual launch provided a candid experience to those present in the room and also to those who streamed it online. The panelists shared their first memories of listening to Pakistani rock music. They also conversed about the changing trends from the 80’s and all the way to current inclinations. To stream the full session, click here.
